The test series was drawn 1–1, and India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, because they had beaten the Australians in the previous tests series 2–1. This was the series in which Rahul Dravid managed a double century and 72 in Adelaide, giving India a famous win and Sachin Tendulkar too made 241 not out and 60 not out in Sydney. Captain Sourav Ganguly made his first test century against Australia, a 144, which gave India a lead of 86 after they were in trouble. VVS Laxman played consistently throughout this series, especially the partnership he put up with Dravid in Adelaide was instrumental in India's long awaited victory in Australia. This series was also the last for Steve Waugh, who had captained Australia to a record 15 consecutive test victories and had a 41 victories from 57 tests when he was the captain.〔Wikipedia article on Steve Waugh〕 ==First-class matches: Victoria v Indians==
